Reliure de l'époque de demi-basane brune, dos lisse orné de filets dentelés dorés, roulettes dorées, fleurons dorés, pièce de titre de maroquin vieux-rouge, titre doré, toutes tranches mouchetées. Edition originale rare agrémentée d'une planche dépliante gravée in fine figurant des crânes de diverses origines ethniques. Exemplaire revêtu en regard de la page de titre de la signature autographe de l'imprimeur. ''Blumenbach fut le fondateur de l'anthropologie. Sa classification des races, cependant avec quelques modifications mineures, est demeurée la même aujourd'hui''. (in Garrison & Morton). ''Cet ouvrage de l'anthropologue allemand J. F. Blumenbach (1752-1840), publié à Göttingen en 1795 sous le titre De generis humani varietate nativa, propose une définition de la notion de race dans le cas de l'espèce humaine - ce qui fera souvent considérer son auteur comme l'un des premiers promoteurs de conceptions strictement racistes, tels Sömmerring et Meiners. Il s'agit néanmoins d'un contresens, dans la mesure où la théorie de Blumenbach, dite dégénérationniste, défend que tous les hommes proviennent d'une souche unique (monogénisme) et ne sont différents qu'en vertu de modifications climatiques progressives et réversibles.'' C'est d'après lui le mécanisme de la raciation de l'espèce humaine. Blumenbach défend une forme de monogénisme contre certains de ses contemporains, en particulier l'anatomiste Samuel Thomas Sömmerring et l'historien et essayiste Christoph Meiners.
